The Foundation

Our Mission

The mission of the Barbara Lewis King Scholarship Foundation is to invest in the future of young men and women through a scholarship program, awarding scholarships to eligible college bound high school students. In addition, the foundation seeks to encourage and support the development of civic responsibility and leadership skills in participating students/applicants through community service, commitment to academics and creative expression.

Our History

The Barbara Lewis King Scholarship Fund, established in 1997 by Mrs. Thena Monts Norman, who recognized the financial needs of college bound students. Mrs. Norman was inspired by her spiritual leader, Bishop Dr. Barbara Lewis King (founder and spiritual leader of Hillside International Truth Center, Inc.), who encouraged her to move forward with her dream. As a tribute to Dr. King, she named the fund in her honor. Since its founding, the fund has provided scholarships to over 300 students. Recipients of a scholarship must demonstrate the qualities Dr. King has exemplified throughout her life: service to church and community, academic excellence, creative expression, civic responsibility, leadership and oratorical skills. The scholarships are awarded annually, and determined by need and availability of funds.

The fund was recently renamed The Barbara Lewis King Scholarship Foundation, but its mission remains unchanged: address the financial needs of deserving students who seek to capture their dreams through higher education! Many recipients have given back to the scholarship fund by providing their time, talent and financial support, that lets future recipients know as they prosper they cannot forget those who follow.

The foundation is grateful for its many sponsors and looks forward to their continuing support. The foundation shall remain focused on its goal of awarding scholarships to those students who have a dream!!
